Wrapping 2024

Live from The Meridian Dec 20, 2024

Looking back

I have to say, despite a lot of other happenings in our world this year, 2024 is going down as one of my best. I saw the mozworth project launch, the album got released on schedule, we promoted it, and we played the first live shows! My goal at the beginning of the year was simply to get the music out. We ended with multiple cherries on top.

The Unexpected

How people respond to the music is out of my control, so watching the top-rated tracks has been fun. One song that surprised me is Queen of the Ocean. It may become the most streamed on the album. Not only that, many people have given me their feedback that it is a favorite. It's a song that came from asking my daughter what I should write about and her reply being "sharks". I honored her request and played to her darker taste for scary movies constructing a narrative that might draw her in. At the time I wrote it, its intended audience was her. When we decided this song made the cut for the album it became a unique opportunity. It’s a dramatic and heartfelt story that provides a perfect canvas to try new things in the studio. Sonically, I wanted to reinforce the narrative as much as possible. The song has a surf rock aesthetic for this reason. I could write pages about this it so I’ll wrap it for the sake of brevity, but it means a lot to my daughter and I that this song has been noticed.

What's next?

A new release!

Inspired by Daniel Johnston, I recently recorded my rendition of "Walking the Cow" and will be releasing it on Hi, How Are You Day (January 24, 2025). The holiday raises awareness around mental health across the country and promotes a culture of checking in on your friends. I'm happy to be a part of it, albeit unofficially.

My plan for the rest of the year is to promote the latest work through live shows around the Austin area and write the material for the next album in 2026. I'm excited this time around to have a band to bounce ideas off of and I'm sure we will be trying new songs live before they are ready for recording.

Wherever you might be raising a glass as we wrap this year, I'll be raising one to you!

Thank you for listening!

Happy New Year!
